about us

From humble beginnings offshore… Bhaatkhande Sangit Vidyalaya, a cultural Organisation dedicated to showcasing and celebrating Indian Classical music was founded over 75 years ago on 4th August 1939 at Rangoon, Burma, to meet the interests of local Indian residents. Soon after the Institution celebrated its second anniversary on 16th August 1941, World war-II interrupted its activities and for the most part, the Institute moved to India in 1942. A skeleton of the Institute remained in Rangoon and on 8th February 1947 the Institute closed the first chapter of its history with a final Music Variety Programme at Rama Krishna Hall, in Rangoon, Burma.

To a fresh start on home soil… Facing innumerable initial difficulties to get a footing the Institution re-established itself in New Delhi to celebrate its 9th Anniversary at the Massey Hall (YMCA) on 12th September 1948. It soon organised its first charity programme in India – a Variety Entertainment in aid of the Royal Indian Navy Personnel at the Y.M.C.A. Hall New Delhi on 21st November 1948. Its Silver Jubilee was celebrated on 31st October, 1964 at Sapru House, New Delhi.

The Institute today… After a lot of struggle and hard work, the Institute was finally granted land by the Government of India in 1990. Today the Institute has its teaching centre located at B-6 Qutub Institutional Area which has over 100 students at present. The Vidyalaya is affiliated to Bhaatkhande Sangit Vidyapith, Lucknow. It is an established examination center of the Vidyapith. The Vidyalaya holds concerts and festivals of music to enrich the cultural life of the capital. The Institute conducts extensive classes tailored to students’ needs.

I’ve been learning Vocal music at the Vidyalaya for the last 3 yrs. Excellent teaching and pedagogy. No other music school covers Ragas in depth like we are taught here.

I’ve had wonderful Experience learning at the Vidyalaya. Had the experience to learn about classical music in a very good family environment. The Teacher is quite encouraging and realistic . We had exposure to singing in front of audiences at the annual programme.

My daughter, Gauri, loves to come here. As a child, I see her inclined to music. She seems to be always singing one or the other thing. At the age of 5, her favourite pastime is to dance along with singing. Even when she is with her friends, in the mid intervals she could be seen singing and dancing.

We have been associated with the Vidyalaya for the last 10 yrs. We have witnessed sincere Efforts made by the Vidyalaya to promote our cultural heritage of classical music and dance in young children. It’s a great feet that children from the age group as young as four join and teachers are able to keep them motivated and interested. This couldn’t be achieved without dedication.
